FAQs: Treating Cosmetic Dental Problems in Newport News

Read answers to commonly asked questions about cosmetic dental care:

Can crooked teeth contribute to TMD?

Crooked teeth can be a cause of temporomandibular joint disorders. Misaligned teeth can create an uneven bite, which places pressure on different parts of the mouth and the jaw joints. Bite imbalance can lead to a patient trying to overcompensate when biting and chewing, leading to stress on the TMJ.

What are my treatment options if I have deep tooth stains?

Some tooth stains can be intrinsic, which means they are caused within the tooth. Intrinsic stains typically do not react to whitening treatment. Porcelain or ceramic dental veneers can cover tooth stains. Veneers are shell-like cosmetic restorations that we bond to the front of the enamel. We can address all of the teeth in the smile line with veneers. Bonding treatment is also an option for patients with one or two stained teeth. Dental bonding uses a biocomposite material to cover teeth.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Sometimes, patients will need the support of a dental crown following their root canal treatment. During a root canal, we remove the infected dental pulp from within the tooth. Then, we seal the tooth with a dental filling. If patients have worn or broken teeth, a dental crown can support the tooth and create a more balanced smile.

Am I a candidate for Invisalign?

If you have mild to moderate orthodontic problems, Invisalign may be right for you. We also recommend Invisalign for teenagers and adults because there is some maintenance required with Invisalign aligners. Patients need to make sure that they clean their aligners daily and remove their aligners to eat and drink anything that is not water. Additionally, patients need to keep their aligners safe in their cases when they are not in use.

What should I do if my crooked teeth are solely cosmetic?

If you have crooked teeth that do not contribute to discomfort or a bite problem, you may benefit from dental veneers. Veneers are thin shells that can cover slightly crooked teeth and create a straighter smile. We recommend veneers for patients who do not require orthodontic treatment but have crooked teeth.
